Carol Sebert, founder of Creative Matters Inc., credits her success to artistic passion and trusted collaborations with partners, staff, clients and mills worldwide. Her passionate commitment to socially responsible business practices has also been a driving force. This commitment led to Creative Matters becoming the first North American licensee of Label STEP, an international organization committed to promoting fair trade in the rug industry, including environmentally friendly production methods, improved working and living conditions for carpet weavers, and the elimination of childlabour in the carpet industry. In 2017 she was named an honorary ambassador by the organization for her tireless commitment to promoting fair trade practices in the carpet industry.

A long-time crusader for the use of wool floor coverings in interior design, she began a collaboration with Campaign for Wool Canada in 2019 to produce floor and wall coverings made with 100% Canadian wool. This resulted in a capsule rug collection with renowned interior designer Sarah Richardson in 2020 and needle felted wall art in 2021.

In 2022 two rugs for Canadian embassies abroad were handtufted in Canada – bringing about Creative Matters’ first totally Canadian rugs. Considered an authority in contemporary carpet design and manufacture, Sebert has presented at many industry events most recently including: COVER Connect in 2021; ADDRESS Design Show in 2020 and DOMOTEX in 2020.

In 2022 she was appointed chairperson for the Wool Interiors Working Group at the International Wool Textile Organization. Born in Virginia, U.S. and raised in Ottawa, Sebert followed her passion for art and textiles to OCAD University before specializing in textile design at Sheridan College. In 2021, she was nominated by the college for a Premier’s Award for outstanding Ontario college graduates in the Creative Arts and Design category. She is also a past professional advisory board member for the School of Crafts and Design.
